How to Avoid Expensive AC Repairs

August 18, 2015

When you think about the ‘Dog Days of Summer’ in Hilton Head Island, chances are that you may find yourself daydreaming about a perfectly chilled home to arrive to when you walk in the door from work. Of course for some homeowners, the sad reality is that they arrive home with a non-working air conditioner and now require an AC repair. So what can you do to get through those seemingly never-ending, sweltering days without maxing out your air conditioner?

  1. Decrease use of appliances that generate heat. Of course you can’t completely quit using your oven and stove, but being mindful of their uses might help more than you would think. Avoid using heat-generating appliances during the warmest parts of the day as your air conditioner will more than likely already be working hard to keep your home cool.

  2. Keep your blinds and shades closed. Windows can let in a lot of heat if your window coverings aren’t used, and considering the temperatures in Hilton Head Island, your home can warm up pretty quickly. If you’re heading to work or are just away from your home for a few hours, make sure to keep your blinds and shades closed to keep any extra heat out.

  3. Use fans. While fans don’t actually alter air temperature, they do circulate air and help keep your home feeling comfortable. However, make sure you turn fans off in rooms that aren’t being used since they don’t lower the air temperature.
