Nearly 200 people are diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis every week. Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is an autoimmune disorder that causes a person’s immune system to attack its own tissues or organs, resulting in nerve damage. Symptoms of MS can include fatigue, weakness in the limbs, dizziness, numbness or tingling, and cognitive dysfunctions. A unique symptom of MS is sensitivity to warmer temperatures. In fact, it’s reported that 60% to 80% of people living with MS show excessive sensitivity to increases in their core body temperature.
The sensitivity to heat isn’t just a symptom, it also makes other symptoms worse.
Since even the smallest climb in core body temperature (from ¼ to ½ a degree) can cause symptoms to worsen, Service Experts Heating and Air Conditioning cares deeply about this cause. Given the climbing temperatures, everyone should be cautious, stay hydrated, and take a break as needed. If you or a loved one has MS, please remember these strategies from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to ease the effect of the heat:
· Keep cool in an air-conditioned area during times of extreme heat and humidity. If an air conditioner is needed to help minimize the symptoms of MS, the cost of these units may be tax deductible if the doctor has written a prescription for it.
· Use cooling products such as vests, neck wraps, and bandanas, during exercise or outdoor activity, or pre- and post-cool.
· Wear loose, “breathe-able” clothing.
· Icy drinks such as “slurpees” or popsicles may provide temporary relief.
· Use an oscillating fan during indoor exercise.
