How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays an important role as your furnace prepares to heat your home.

Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board starts running the draft inducer blower motor. This exhausts combustion gases from the heat exchanger and pulls in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that sufficient air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and tells the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and provides heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails

When your pressure switch isn’t operating correctly, you’ll likely hear the fan run and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace shuts down completely. When a part isn’t performing right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.

Your furnace will let you know something is incorrect with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to display error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may note fast flashes or an alternating slow flash as it communicates a fault code.
